Project Success in Portugal: Bizzocchi VP33 Aerial Ladder Back in Service

We are proud to announce the successful commissioning of our latest revamping project at our customer’s site in Portugal. When a machinery manufacturer is no longer active, maintaining their legacy equipment becomes a massive industry challenge. Rather than letting a highly capable Bizzocchi VP33 fire-fighting aerial ladder platform (BHD 330) face retirement, EHR Elektronik and MOBA Mobile Automation stepped in to completely redesign and modernize its entire control architecture.

Bizzocchi VP33 fire-fighting ladder modernized in Portugal: MOBA HMI console, MPC113 and MSC113 controllers

The project

Bringing a machine whose manufacturer is no longer active back to full field operation through intelligent retrofitting.

  • Machine: Bizzocchi VP33 (BHD 330) fire-fighting aerial ladder platform
  • Location: customer site, Portugal
  • Partnership: EHR Elektronik + MOBA Mobile Automation, a long-standing partnership in mobile machine automation and worldwide system integration

What we did

A complete technological overhaul:

  • Total electronic redesign: all legacy wiring and components replaced with state-of-the-art products up to the latest standards
  • Next-gen control: MPC113 controllers and MSC113 slave units across truck, turret and cage on a robust CAN-BUS network
  • Modernized interfaces: MOBA HMIs with 7″ displays on the turret and cage operator panels for real-time monitoring and control
  • Sophisticated LMI (Load Moment Indicator): 10 dynamic geometric tables, 4 distinct swing zones and dynamic lateral tables that adjust automatically to cage load and outrigger positions

A sustainable solution

By bringing this complex machine back to full field operation, we deliver more than a high-performance solution to our customer. We actively contribute to the global economy and environmental sustainability by extending the lifecycle of valuable heavy machinery through intelligent retrofitting.

Field engineering

Complex revamping projects like the VP33 demand deep field engineering expertise, custom application software and seamless hardware integration.

Products used in the project

On the VP33, MPC113 controllers and MSC113 slave units work together on the CAN-BUS network across the truck, turret and cage. Detailed specifications of both products are on their product pages:

  • MPC113 Redundant Master Controller: built for safety-oriented mobile machine applications with two application processors and a separate watchdog processor; programmable with Codesys 3.5 and offering two CAN BUS interfaces.
  • MSC113 Redundant Slave Controller: one CAN Bus interface (ISO 11898), digital/PWM high side outputs with ON-OFF status feedback and IP66/IP67 ingress protection.

The 7″ MOBA displays in this project are GDC800 units: MOBA GDC800 7″ Color Graphic Display.

Frequently asked questions

Who takes on the manufacturer’s obligations after a revamping?

The party making the substantial modification takes on the manufacturer’s obligations (CE conformity, technical file). EHR Elektronik is not the machine manufacturer: we design and commission the control system and prepare its technical documentation.

Does the revamping include structural inspection?

No. Structural risks such as metal fatigue and structural inspection are outside our scope; our work is limited to the control system.
