CODESYS Application Development for Mobile Machines

EHR Elektronik works in mobile machine control and automation with control units, displays, sensors, joysticks and CODESYS application software. We have been operating since 2018, and our team has over twenty years of field experience. This page covers the software side: which hardware we write for, how we handle communication and the display interface, and what we deliver.

What do we write?

Application software from the machine’s control logic to the operator display.

  • The machine application running on the controller (CODESYS)
  • CAN communication: CANopen and CAN J1939
  • The operator display (HMI) interface
  • A Windows service tool for commissioning

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants us to write the software, or wants their own team to write it.

  • EHR Elektronik develops the application
  • Training and consultancy for your own engineers
  • Electroforce control units can be programmed by you

Which hardware do we write for?

Hardware What we do
MOBA MPC113 and MSC113 controllers EHR Elektronik develops the application software with CODESYS 3.5.
TOPCON OPUS displays Supplied in the CODESYS version; the display application can be written in CODESYS.
Electroforce EFC14, EFC24, EFC39 Customers program them themselves, or EHR Elektronik develops the application.
MRS Electronic control units (e.g. Micro PLC CAN 4 ANA) EHR Elektronik develops the application software; MRS products are programmed with MRS Applics Studio.

The MPC113 is built for safety-oriented mobile machine applications, with two application processors and a separate watchdog processor; it is the hardware our application software runs on.

Communication: CANopen and J1939

On a mobile machine the controller, display, sensors and valve drivers talk over CAN. In our training we cover CANBus, CANopen and CAN J1939 as advanced communication protocols. In one conversion project we read the machine’s stepwise throttle input over J1939 and generated a 4-20 mA command for the inverter through an MRS module; the story is here.

We also write node software: we built a complete CANopen application for the MRS CAN I/O PLC (NMT, heartbeat, SDO, TPDO/RPDO) and a single-file Windows service tool for commissioning. The EHR CANopen node software is also available on request for the Micro PLC CAN 4 ANA, CAN I/O CC16WP and Motor Controller 3CH.

The display (HMI) interface

We treat the interface as design work beyond code: maximum comprehension with minimal text, universal symbols instead of text, and adaptive brightness. We work directly with professional graphic designers. The approach is described in our text-free HMI design post.

Migration from C to CODESYS and team training

In an excavator conversion project we migrated the control software from C to CODESYS; the display brand and model were replaced and Euro 5 engine DPF control was integrated into the system. We gave hands-on training to the customer’s software development engineer, who can now develop and maintain their own applications. Details of the project are here.

For an engineering team we ran a 2-day programme: day one on CANBus, CANopen and CAN J1939, day two on the CODESYS framework and programming fundamentals. Alongside our main operations, EHR Elektronik offers expert consultancy and tailored programming trainings.

Process

  1. Machine and requirements. We clarify which hardware will be used, which sensors and displays are connected and what the machine must do.
  2. Application software. Control logic, CAN communication and the display interface are written in the environment of the chosen hardware (CODESYS or MRS Applics Studio).
  3. Commissioning. The software is commissioned on the machine; service tools and parameter settings are used at this stage when needed.
  4. Documentation and training. User documentation is delivered in English and Turkish; training is given to the team that wants it.

Source code and licence

Source code is not supplied or sold. What we deliver is the compiled application software and service software; the software carries a licence number. If you want your own team to develop the software, the training and consultancy above, or the hardware family you can program yourself, are there for that.

Frequently asked questions

Which CODESYS version do you work with?

CODESYS 3.5 for the MOBA MPC113 and MSC113. On TOPCON OPUS displays the CODESYS programming option is 3.5 SP19 or higher.

Can I commission several machines with the same software?

With our service tools and the compiled software several machines of the same type and model can be commissioned; the software carries a licence number.

Which hardware is there for safety-oriented applications?

The MPC113 has two application processors and a separate watchdog processor; its internal architecture is Cat 3 as per EN ISO 13849-1. This is a property of the hardware architecture.

Can we program the Electroforce control units ourselves?

Yes. Customers can program the Electroforce EFC14, EFC24 and EFC39 control units themselves, or EHR Elektronik develops the application.

In which languages are documentation and support provided?

Support is provided in Turkish and English. If you provide the translation, other languages written in the Latin alphabet can be added, and non-Latin alphabets such as Russian too, provided the devices used support them.
