Control Systems for Cranes and Aerial Work Platforms

The control system of an aerial work platform or crane has to know at all times how far the boom has extended, at what angle it stands, how much load is in the basket and how hard the wind blows. EHR Elektronik develops the controllers, displays and application software that collect these measurements over CAN. Below you will find our components and the projects where we use them.

If you manufacture platforms or cranes

We can handle the sensor set and the application software together.

  • EHR Elektronik develops the application software for MOBA MPC113 and MSC113 controllers with CODESYS 3.5
  • You can program the Electroforce EFC14, EFC24 and EFC39 control units yourself, or we develop the application
  • User documentation is delivered in English and Turkish

If you own or operate a fleet

The control system of an older platform can be renewed.

  • A similar system can also be applied to existing vehicles after a preliminary assessment
  • On platforms whose manufacturer is no longer active we rebuilt the entire control architecture
  • Structural risks and structural inspection are outside our scope

Measurement: length, angle, load and wind

  • Length: the Baumer GCA3 (4.7 m) and GCA5 (7.8 m) cable transducers have a redundant, 2-channel CANopen output; IP 67, -40…+85 °C. The GCA5 also measures a 0…360° inclination angle together with length.
  • Inclination: the GIM140R is 48 mm, 1-dimensional with a 0…360° range. The GIM600R is applicable up to PLd (ISO 13849) and has redundant versions. The GIM600DR uses sensor fusion for gyroscope-based motion compensation.
  • Load: the MOBA MRW1000 load cell measures the load of an aerial work platform basket or mobile cranes; it compensates the lever arm effect and the temperature effect on the zero point.
  • Wind: the Electroforce PA2 cup anemometer measures 0..60 m/s; a 4..20 mA version, the PA2-C, is also available.

The output of the Baumer length and inclination sensors is CANopen. For Baumer products see the Baumer page; we work closely with brands other than MOBA and supply their products at economical prices.

Control and operator side

  • Control: the MOBA MPC113 redundant master controller and the MSC113 slave controller; the GDC800 is a sunlight readable 7″ display with 800 x 480 resolution.
  • Panel: the MOBA HMImc lets you build your own operator panel from keyboard, display and joystick modules; options include 2 joysticks with a 16 button keypad and emergency stop.
  • Joystick: the Makersan MO 391 and 387 midi joystick has a full-redundant contactless platform and up to 5 million lifetime cycles. For other models see the joysticks category.

Portugal: aerial ladder platform

MPC113 and MSC113 across truck, turret and cage; dynamic LMI.

In the MANLIFT project one EFC39 controls the chassis movements and working time, one EFC24 manages the joystick, basket movements and display; a dual-axis CANBUS inclination sensor measures the ground slope. To keep cable density down, only Canbus runs between the chassis and the basket console. When we renew a platform whose manufacturer is no longer active, EHR Elektronik is not the machine manufacturer; the party making the substantial modification takes on the manufacturer’s obligations. Details are on the retrofit page. For fire-fighting ladders and platforms see the fire vehicles page.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are the inclination sensors?

Typical accuracy is ±0.2° for the GIM140R and ±0.1° for the GIM600R (+25 °C). The GIM600DR, designed for dynamic applications, has a typical dynamic accuracy of ±0.5° and a typical static accuracy of ±0.1°.

When does the wind sensor give pulses?

The PA2 threshold is 0.5 m/s. It gives two pulses per rotation and 67 pulses at 30 m/s.

Is the joystick output CAN or analog?

The Makersan MO 391 and 387 offer analog, PWM and CAN output options. The EHR Elektronik version has a CANopen output; the default baud rate is 250 kbit/s and the Node ID and baud rate are programmable.

Can you add these sensors to an existing platform?

A similar system can be applied to existing vehicles after a preliminary assessment. Our Baumer length and inclination sensors have a CANopen output, so they connect to the same CAN line.

Who keeps the software and source code?

Source code is not supplied or sold. With our service tools and the compiled software several machines of the same type and model can be commissioned; the software carries a licence number.

Tell us about your platform or crane

Send the machine type, boom structure and the limitation functions you need; we will assess it after a preliminary review.
